Once Sonic freed him, the two got away from Scratch and Grounder and rejoined their friends. When Sonic arrived in a disguise, Big Mike was used by Sonic to make Scratch and Grounder revealed the secret booby traps on the way to the village, though the process made Big Mike angry and he decided to change his name to Mad Mike. As they prepared for the trip to the village, Big Mike was kidnapped by Scratch and Grounder who took him to be interrogated. Some time later, Big Mike and Big Griz assisted Sonic and Tails in saving a starving village who were forced into constructing a Robotnik statue. Once Robotnik's munitions factory was destroyed with the train, Big Mike and Big Griz celebrated their victory until Sonic and Tails left. To redeem themselves, they helped Sonic and Tails keep the explosive-laden train from crashing into the Buffalo village. As they got stuck to the front of the train which was heading for a large cactus patch, Big Mike and Big Griz were saved by Sonic and were convinced that they had been tricked once Sonic and Tails proved who they were. īig Mike and Big Griz attempted several times to stop Sonic and Tails, but were continuously foiled. They freed Scratch and Grounder, believing they were Sonic and Tails, and were tricked by the Badniks into helping them stop Sonic and Tails, who they were convinced were Scratch and Grounder, from hijacking the Robotnik Express. However, when they got there, they found Scratch and Grounder wrapped up in bandages (due to Sonic freeing himself and Tails). Hearing Scratch and Grounder gloat through a long distance mega phone about capturing Sonic, Big Mike and Big Griz set out to rescue them. When seeing the Robotnik Express, Big Mike and Big Griz headed out to stop the train, considering it their "patriotic duty". He has dark brown and coconut-colored fur and green eyes, and wears a blue vest. He possesses a large belly and muzzle, and has well big arms and short legs. If you’ve never seen an episode, check out the four-parter “Quest for the Chaos Emeralds” which includes the episodes “Blackbot the Pirate”, “Hedgehog of the Hound Table”, “Robotnik’s Pyramid Scheme”, and “Prehistoric Sonic”.Big Mike is at least three times the size of Sonic. If you’re a fan, revisit your favorite episode on DVD, VHS, Netflix, or YouTube. As a kid, I never would have thought that I would one day be able to own the entire series on magical discs. Since then, I’ve grown up (how much depends on who you ask) but still enjoy watching the occasional episode on DVD. I even began recording the show and soon amassed a stack of a dozen VHS tapes. Despite the confusing aspects of the premiere, I was hooked on the show and didn’t miss a single episode. I remember being confused, I wasn’t sure if these characters appeared in a game that I missed (they hadn’t) or if they were intended to be secondary characters for the rest of the show (they weren’t). “Best Hedgehog”, however, puts new characters Lucas and Lucinda at the forefront. The true first episode, “Super Special Sonic Search and Smash Squad”, actually introduces the main baddies Scratch and Grounder. Looking back, “Best Hedgehog” was a very odd premiere episode. I caught the first act of the premiere upstairs, and then ran downstairs to see Sonic in color. So seeing Sonic in a cartoon, talking no less, was a huge deal. Yes, despite it being 1993 we still had an old black and white in our kitchen.īy that point in my Sonic fandom, I owned Sonic 1 and 2 for the Genesis and had picked up the first issue of the Archie Sonic comics. The image after the break is a pretty accurate representation of what I saw. It was September 6th 1993 and I was eating breakfast in our kitchen, catching the first episode (in airing order, not production order) “Best Hedgehog”. ![]() When The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (hereby known as AoStH) premiered, I remember exactly where I was. ![]() ![]() While I was a huge Ninja Turtles and The Real Ghostbusters fan, both cartoons were at their heights a few years before I began watching. It was the only cartoon of my childhood which I remember watching from the very beginning. Today marks the 20th anniversary of one of Sonic’s most inventive, craziest, and funniest cartoons: Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog! One of my strongest nostalgic connections to the Sonic franchise was this 1993 cartoon series.
